CHAPTER 18

Dinner was nice. They had shared a bottle of wine, enjoyed their meal, and talked. Gretchen laughed when Amanda nearly missed the glass entirely when refilling. With dinner finished, they retired to the living room. Gretchen wasn’t sure if the date was over or if there was more to it. It was already after ten. She should be getting home. She still had some studying to do. Amanda was sitting on the sofa, though, waiting for Gretchen to join her.

“Movie?” she asked.

“Sure,” Gretchen replied quickly.

She sat down next to Amanda, who passed her the remote before she poured the first glass from the new bottle of wine. Gretchen hadn’t prepared to get drunk tonight, but Amanda had good wine, and she kept refilling Gretchen’s glass. Gretchen almost instinctively put her arm on the back of the sofa. When Amanda finished pouring, she lay back against it. Gretchen smiled and wrapped her arm more fully around the woman’s shoulders.

“This is nice,” Amanda said.

“It is,” Gretchen agreed. “Do you want to keep talking about what this is, or do you just want to watch the movie?”

“This is nice, Gretchen. That’s all that matters to me right now. I get it, okay? You don’t know if you can do the relationship thing. If this is only a nice first date, and it ends after, I just want to pretend for the next couple of hours that that’s not the case.”

Amanda’s walls had come down, thanks to the alcohol. Gretchen placed her free hand on Amanda’s thigh, pulling the woman into her body more.

“Do you want to go out with me this weekend?” Gretchen asked.

Amanda lifted up to look at her and said, “Yeah?”

“I can try, Amanda. If you can be patient, I want to try. You’re so damn cute right now,” she said with a smile, staring at Amanda’s adorable smile.

“I’m cute?” she asked.

“Yes, you’re cute. You’re a little drunk, so your cheeks are pink. Your eyes are glossy, and you’re smiling because I asked you out. That’s cute.”

“I’m so cute that you’re going out with me again?” she asked.

“Depends on whether or not you say yes.”

“Yes,” Amanda replied. “And I’m going out with you again because I’m so cute,” she added.

Gretchen laughed and said, “Your logic is flawed, but I’ll give that one to you.” She leaned down and kissed her.

“You should stay tonight,” Amanda suggested, kissing her back.

“I should absolutely not stay tonight. I need to go home soon, actually. I still have some study group case summaries to write.”

“Nope. You agreed to watch this movie. You’re stuck with me,” Amanda said, pressing her head to Gretchen’s shoulder again. “At least for tonight.”

“How about I watch the movie, tuck your drunk ass into bed, and leave after that? I’ll pick you up for our next date. We’ll go somewhere nice. Well, nice for me is probably shit for you, but if we’re doing this, we might as well get used to that.”

“Lowly intern,” Amanda muttered.

Gretchen laughed and pulled her in closer.
